Emotional Wellness Fact Sheet

This fact sheet addresses emotional wellness and is part of PRA Well-Being’s eight-part Tips for Providers series. The Tips for Providers series highlights how providers can enhance the wellness of individuals with mental health conditions through each of the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. Each fact sheet examines strategies to enhance that dimension of wellness, provides an overview of how each dimension of wellness relates to the other dimensions and highlights how each dimension of wellness relates to mental health.  

Emotional wellness pertains to the ability to express feelings, adjust to emotional challenges, and cope with stressful life experiences. Emotional stability makes it easier to recognize opportunities for growth, development, and reflection.  

Connections with others are essential for developing and maintaining emotional wellness. Strong social networks and relationships with people who practice healthy habits can leave an impression on others and perpetuate healthy behaviors. Connecting with others instills a sense of belonging and safety that can also improve positive emotional states. Self-reflection is also important for identifying emotions and patterns of thought. Reflective practices can be done before, during, or after an event to prepare for an emotional reaction. Reflection can make it easier to manage the response and cope with consequential feelings. Reflection can be practiced in one’s own through mindful meditation or with a peer. 

Negative emotional states and positive emotional states influence the other dimensions of wellness. Mind-body practices and other mindfulness practices can help evoke more positive emotional states to develop healthier behaviors and habits. Negative thought patterns can affect our ability to do work, maintain relationships, make healthy choices, and get proper sleep. Support systems and other practices described in this fact sheet can help replace negative thought patterns with compassionate ones.
